According to an old Chinese proverb:” sow paddy in your country if you plan for a year. Plant trees; if you plan for a decade and nurture youth if you are planning for the future. Perhaps this is where the National Cadet Corps better known as the (NCC) has proved its role since India gained its independence. The NCC was established with a view to inculcate in the youth a sense of patriotism that contributes towards the building of the nation. The NCC has been a platform for the individual upliftment of the youth and works on the principal of channelizing the energy of the youth into constructive pursuits. Apart from the thrill and excitement NCC promotes camaraderie amongst the student fraternity and preserves the cultural traditions and values of the society.
The National Cadet Corps has its Headquarters at New Delhi and represents the student wing of the Indian military core and its. It is open to school and college students on voluntary basis. NCC trains the cadets to become responsive individuals, sensitive to the needs of the community. This active participation teaches dignity of labor and ignites the creative instinct that lies latent in the youth. This is achieved through the scientifically planned NCC curriculum. It aims at developing a new work of ethos characterized by hard work, sincerity of purpose and the ideals of selfless service with a secular outlook. Set up as a voluntary organization the National Cadet Corps recruits cadets from high schools, colleges and Universities all over India.
The aim is to develop from the youth and the civilian crowd, a defense surplus in the country equipped with the skill of basic military training and small ammunition. There is no compulsion for those active in the NCC to pursue with a career in the defense field, but yes, they do stand a better chance given preference over normal candidates during job selections. Established on the 15 July 1948, the NCC is based on the National Cadet Corps Act of 1948. During World War II, the British were dissatisfied with the performance of the University Officers Training Corps better known as the UOTC which they set-up in the year 1942. The National Cadet Corps since then was considered as a successor of the (UOTC). A committee headed by Pandit H.N. Kunzru was founded to train young men and women in schools and colleges on a national level.
Approved by the Governor General on the 15 of July 1948, the NCC became voluntary organisation a number of Indian schools the National Cadet Corps. From the Rann of Kutch in the west to Kohima in the east and Leh in the Himalayas to the Nicobar Islands in the south, the NCC is everywhere. The Air Wing was added to the NCC in the year 1952 while the Naval Wing was added to this in the year 1956.
